Crime prevention strategies aim to reduce the risk of crimes while educating possible victims about measures that can be taken to protect themselves. Use the following tips to help lower crime in your area and create a safer community.
Auto Crime
- Never keep a vehicle running and unattended while letting it warm up
- Install anti theft devices
- Never leave possessions in plain view-take values with you
- Park in well lit areas, with high volumes of pedestrian activity
- Report any suspicious person or activity around a vehicle to the police
Home Security
- Ensure home is locked and well lit
- Keep entry point such as windows, doors locked
- Install alarm systems
- Inform neighbours about vacation departure and return dates
Internet security:
Tips for Kids for Safe Online Communication
- NEVER give out personal information such as your address, telephone number, place of work or school
- Don’t keep online relationship/ friends a secret
- Report or Block accounts that make you feel uncomfortable
- Turn off location services on social media apps (Snap chat, Instagram)
Tips for Parents
- Learn about your child’s internet usage
- Look into filtering software that is able to block out offensive or inappropriate materials
- Communicate with your child that you will be monitoring their online usage
- Inform your child about the harm of sharing intimate photos online
- Cannot be taken back
- Can be shared with other people
- Could be found when applying for a job/university
Scam and Fraud
- If it sounds too good to be true, it no doubt is
- Educate yourself about common scams by using the resources below
- Ensure that your accounts are secure and passwords are not shared with others
- Beware of upfront fees
- Don’t give out your personal information
