FILE: 2022-1690, 2022-1739
Port Moody Police were able to intervene in two separate street racing incidents in the past week.

On April 5, 2022 at about 10 p.m., frontline officers responded to a report of two vehicles street racing through St Johns Street in Port Moody. Officers converged on the vehicles and both were stopped by police. Both drivers were class 7 learners and did not have any supervisors with them. Violation tickets were issued and the vehicles were removed from the road.

Several days later, on April 8, 2022 just prior to 11 p.m., a patrol officer spotted two vehicles stopped at a traffic light approaching Murray Street. The vehicles were revving their engines and took off at the green light, reaching speeds in excess of 100 km/h in the posted 50 km/h corridor. Both vehicles were impounded and violation tickets were served.

“Reckless behavior on our roadways puts everyone at risk” states Constable Sam Zacharias. “We encourage the public to call 9-1-1 in instances like these as we treat these calls with a high priority”. Fines for excessive speeding start at $368 and are accompanied by a minimum 7-day vehicle impoundment. Additionally, street racing can also constitute a criminal offence in some cases.
