FILE: 2022-1826 – Multiple children were treated for minor injuries after being exposed to an unknown substance at a school playground.

On April 14, 2022 at about 12:30 p.m., Port Moody Police frontline officers as well as Port Moody Fire Rescue and B.C. Ambulance Service were called to Aspenwood Elementary School for reports of multiple children who were experiencing reactions to an unknown substance. The substance is suspected to be a hot sauce and it appears to have been deliberately smeared on high-touch surfaces of the playground. In total, 7 children were treated on scene for minor injuries relating to exposures of the children’s eyes. Several of the children went home with parents and the remainder stayed at school for the day.

“This incident appears to be a deliberate act and we are actively investigating the matter to determine who is responsible” states Constable Sam Zacharias. “Anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour around the school grounds on today’s date is asked to call police.”
