FILE: 2024-587 – Charges relating to assaulting and attempting to disarm a peace officer have been recommended against a 35-year-old Coquitlam man during a Thursday evening arrest.

On February 8, 2024 at about 10:30 p.m., a Port Moody Police frontline officer conducted a traffic stop to check a driver’s sobriety in the 2600 block of Saint Johns Street, Port Moody. The driver provided samples into an approved screening device which exceeded the legal limit, resulting in a 90-day driving prohibition.

The driver became hostile and belligerent with officers, and given his level of intoxication, was arrested for intoxication in a public place. During the arrest, it is alleged the driver assaulted officers, resisted arrest and attempted to disarm one of the officers of their sidearm. Officers were able to take control of the subject and place him in handcuffs. Charges including assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, and attempting to disarm a peace officer have been recommended as the man remains in custody at this time.

“These officers controlled the subject while keeping themselves and the public safe” states Constable Sam Zacharias. “Thankfully there were no serious injuries as a result of this incident and it is fortunate the matter was safely resolved.”
