FILE: 24-2092, 2096, 2099, 2100, 2114, 2117, 2120, 2121 – Port Moody Police were kept busy over the weekend responding to calls at Sasamat Lake involving weapons and alcohol.
On May 10, 2024, just before 7 p.m., police responded to a report of a youth who had been pepper sprayed at the main beach. Both the victim and suspects fled the scene prior to police arrival. Police also dealt with hundreds of intoxicated youths at closing time who blocked parts of Bedwell Bay Road – some attempted to hail rides from strangers. Police notified Translink who dispatched a large bus to the park to transport the youths out of the area.
On May 11, 2024, police were kept busy with traffic gridlock issues as well as impaired driving. At about 5:40 p.m., frontline officers were called to the lake for a report of a male youth who had been shot multiple times with a BB gun and then pepper sprayed. The victim was treated on scene and the investigation remains ongoing.
“It seems a lot of these calls for service involve alcohol and unsupervised youths” states Constable Sam Zacharias. “Though these issues are not new to the lake, we once again remind parkgoers to leave the alcohol at home, plan a safe ride home, and to pack their patience.”
Port Moody Police will continue to increase patrols at the lake as weather permits.
