Port Moody Police arrested an impaired driver in a dumbfounding set of circumstances Sunday morning.

On February 23, 2025 at about 1:45 a.m., officers were called to a disturbance as a wedding wrapped up in the Moody Centre area of Port Moody. Good Samaritans took car keys away from an intoxicated man who indicated he was going to drive home. After his keys were taken away, the man became agitated, causing a disturbance and triggering the call to police. Attending officers arrested the man at scene for Breach of Peace as a preventative measure then transported him home to his Vancouver residence with the understanding he would retrieve his parked vehicle much later once sober.

At around 3:50 a.m., officers spotted a vehicle excessively speeding at 123 km/h in front of the Port Moody Police Headquarters situated in the 3000 blk of St Johns Street – a posted 50 km/h corridor. The vehicle was stopped, and the driver was determined to be the same impaired man who had been transported home by police hours earlier. He told officers he used a rideshare to get back to Port Moody to drive his vehicle home.

The 29-year-old driver was arrested for impaired driving and was held in police custody until sober. He faces charges under the Motor Vehicle Act, a driving ban, and a vehicle impoundment. Additionally, a high-risk driving report has been filed with Road Safety B.C. to seek greater punishment.
