SUBJECT: Mock Collision – Port Moody Senior Secondary
PORT MOODY – On May 28, 2019 Port Moody Police, Port Moody Fire Rescue, BC Ambulance Service and ICBC conducted a mock collision for the grade 11 and grade 12 students of Port Moody Senior Secondary.
May is “Speed Awareness” month and as the students are preparing for their summer vacations this provided the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the potential consequences of impaired, distracted driving and speeding. “We want to remind students that making smart, yet simple decisions, can easily prevent tragedies like these crashes from happening. Everyone has a role to play,” says Sgt Travis Carroll of the Port Moody Police.
The mock collision displayed what a two vehicle; impaired driving crash involving a fatality could look like. Port Moody Police, Port Moody Fire Rescue and the BC Ambulance Service responded to the mock collision using all of the tools necessary to extricate and treat the victims. Port Moody Senior Secondary grade 12 students filled the roles of the vehicles occupants and witnesses.
We are hoping that by demonstrating a realistic collision involving student peers that these same students will think twice before getting behind the wheel or getting into a vehicle with someone who has been drinking. The consequences can be deadly.
The fallout of the crash scene was dynamically recorded from multiple perspectives including the extrication of the driver and passengers, medical treatment of the injured, interviews of witnesses, and even the arrest process of the suspected impaired driver.
Port Moody Police would sincerely like to thank Port Moody Fire Rescue, BC Ambulance Service, ICBC and the students and staff of Port Moody Senior Secondary for their involvement and dedication to this event.
