SUBJECT: Eventful long weekend at Sasamat Lake
FILE:

Port Moody Police officers were kept busy at Sasamat Lake during this August long weekend, responding to numerous calls including a large brawl.

Port Moody Police are again asking visitors of Sasamat Lake to exercise good judgment after a weekend of disorder-related calls for service. Police responded to dozens of calls over the weekend and City of Port Moody Bylaw Officers issued nearly 40 violation tickets to illegally parked vehicles.

Some files of note include a 20-person fight that erupted at closing time on Saturday where several participants were treated on scene for minor injuries. That file remains under investigation. On Sunday afternoon, a park ranger was threatened by an inebriated man who was subsequently arrested by Port Moody Police frontline officers. There were also dozens of liquor pour-outs, several ejections and numerous vehicles towed for parking in clearly marked tow-away zones.

“We want to remind the public that Sasamat parking lots fill up very quickly and we encourage motorists to arrive very early or take public transit to the lake. Parking or stopping on Bedwell Bay Road is prohibited as it impedes traffic and prevents first responders from responding to emergencies” states Constable Sam Zacharias, media relations officer. “As well, Sasamat lake is a family-friendly venue. Liquor and intoxicating substances are prohibited; violators will be ticketed and ejected from the park.”

The Port Moody Police Department continues to work closely with Metro Vancouver park staff, City of Port Moody Bylaws and Coquitlam Towing to ensure the lake remains a safe environment for all users.
