File 2022-1331:   Port Moody Police are thanking a local resident for jumping into action to protect a young child in danger last week.

On March 14, 2022, at about 7:50 pm, bystander Andrew Logan witnessed a man who was experiencing a mental health crisis, holding his young child and attempting to run into moving traffic in the 2200 block of St. Johns Street.

Andrew restrained the man and was able to take custody of the child, bringing the two-year-old to safety.  Police arrived on scene within two minutes of being dispatched.  Frontline officers apprehended the man under the Mental Health Act and he was subsequently transported to hospital.  Thankfully, no one was injured during this dynamic incident and appropriate follow-up has been taken to ensure on-going welfare of the child.

“We want to recognize the selfless actions of Andrew who put the safety of this child above his own, potentially preventing harm to this child” states Constable Sam Zacharias, adding that “we do not encourage anyone to put themselves in harm’s way, however, we truly appreciate his actions.”
