Port Moody’s 2022 Crime Statistics have been compiled and they continue to remain one of the lowest amongst Metro Vancouver jurisdictions.
Last year in 2022, Port Moody Police Department frontline officers responded to 6778 calls for service, which is a 4.7% decrease compared to the year prior.
In the category of property crime, Port Moody saw decreases in mischiefs and thefts from vehicles. However, reports of fraud rose from 104 incidents in 2021 to 123 incidents in 2022. Residential break & enters also mildly increased from 20 occurrences in 2021 to 24 occurrences in 2022.
In road safety, frontline officers saw a two-fold increase in impaired driving, proactively taking 209 impaired drivers off the road in 2022 compared to 104 impaired drivers the year prior. Other traffic occurrences like collisions and reports of dangerous drivers remained fairly consistent.
While reported assaults were down from 87 incidents in 2021 to a total of 80 incidents in 2022, extortion and harassment files increased 8% to 108 incidents in 2022.
“These crime statistics demonstrate that Port Moody continues to be a very safe community to live, work and visit” states Chief Constable Dave Fleugel. “I am very pleased at the increased enforcement capacity around impaired driving but disappointed that the number of impaired drivers on our roads are still too high. Though there are some increases in certain types of crime, these numbers are consistent with pre-pandemic levels and remain well below provincial and national averages. With help from an engaged and vigilant community, our officers continue to keep our community safe.”
It is important to note that these figures only capture occurrences reported to police and do not necessarily reflect the true number of occurrences. Port Moody Police Department is moving towards online crime reporting for lower severity crime which will facilitate and encourage crime reporting.
