Crime Analysis Section

The Crime Analysis Section is an investigative support and resource which interprets data or information pertaining to a case or series of cases. The Crime Analyst examines criminal occurrences in order to identify crime patterns and series, behavioural trends (modus operandi) and Hot Spots (geographical areas with high concentrations of crimes). The ultimate goal of the Analyst is to identify and recommend tactics to combat both specific and general crime problems. The Analyst performs both tactical (daily emerging crime patterns, hot spots) and strategic analysis (focusing on a specific problem to develop a long-term solution).

The Analyst also engages in Intelligence Analysis, which focuses on the collection of information about particular criminal acts, individuals, and illegal organizations. Intelligence Analysis involves identifying entities of interest, the flow of commodities, and the connection of events and entities.

The Analyst aims to provide their findings for guided, informed and timely action.

Alex Tyakoff is a senior crime analyst with the Port Moody Police Department and a faculty member with BCIT where he teaches courses in crime and intelligence analysis. Alex Tyakoff has served in public safety for the past 15 years, including engagements with Delta Police and the Organized Crime Agency of BC.
