On February 7th 2010 at approximately 0250hrs. The Port Moody Police Department responded to an assault in progress at the Highland Way Recreation Centre located in the 300 blk of Highland Way.
Upon arrival, police located and arrested a male later identified as Benjamin-Arreaga Escobar. Police obtained statements from several witnesses who were traumatized by the unprovoked assault. Witnesses stated they were having a slumber party to celebrate a birthday party when the unknown and uninvited male disguised in a ninja-like outfit entered the recreation centre and started assaulting them with a hammer.
The Port Moody Police believe the quick reaction from a couple of individuals at the slumber party averted more potentially serious injuries.
Arreaga-Escobar was transported to the Port Moody Police Department and held over the weekend for court Monday morning; Arreaga-Escobar has been charged with the following:
- Assault Sec 256 ccc
- Attempt Robbery Sec 344(b)
- Assault with Weapon Sec 257 (a)
- Break and Enter Sec 348(1)(b)
- Disguise with Intent Sec 351(2)
