On October 23rd 2009 at approximately 3:45 pm the Port Moody Police responded to a 911 call at Sasamat Lake, regarding a missing person. Officers upon arrival spoke with an eye witness; who stated he observed a middle aged male in the middle of the lake in a boat; and then the boat capsized sending the man into the water. The male was attempting to swim to shore when the witness lost visual contact with the male.

A subsequent search by the RCMP search and rescue dive team was able to locate and retrieve the body. The Coroners Office was advised and a coroner attended the scene The Port Moody Police Department believes this to be a tragic accident and has notified the family who is grieving this terrible mishap.

The Port Moody Police has ruled out drugs or alcohol as a contributing factor to this accident.
 
The Port Moody Police Department would like to remind all boaters to adhere to the following safety tips in light of this tragedy; wear all floatation devices, and when you boat alone to notify friends or family where you will be boating.
