Miscellaneous:

A resident sent their resume for a job posting via internet only to have the “employer” send them a cheque for $14,500 with a request that they cash it and send $14,000 back. The extra $500 would be a “bonus” for them…provided they sent all their personal banking information to the “employer.” Fortunately our complainant recognized this as a scam and did not fall victim to it.

A resident contacted PMPD to report a fraud. The male received a job offer via the internet. He received a cheque for $41,000 with instructions to cash the cheque into his account then wire $3,600 to the company on multiple occasions. The male was supposed to receive “10%” of the money as his commission. The $41,000 cheque was fraudulent.

A number of our thefts from vehicles have turned into frauds when criminals use the stolen cards or information to buy cellular phones, open new credit cards, take out loans etc. One of the best ways to stay safe is to limit the amount of information in your wallet at any time. Only carry what you need on a day to day basis: debit card, 1 credit card, driver’s license etc. The new driver’s licenses have your care-card information on them. You should also keep a list of all your cards & their respective numbers safe at home (not on your computer where they can be lost to a virus / hacker). If you have been the victim of theft and lost cards or personal information call Equifax to check if any fraudulent accounts have been opened.

PMPD were notified by staff at the local food bank that someone had tried to disguise mothballs as part of a food donation. Fortunately no one was hurt. The investigation is ongoing.
